Following the popular enthusiasm for the unexpected performance of Henri Pescarolo and Johnny Servoz-Gavin’s MS630 #24 at the 1968 24 Hours, Matra Sport decided to accelerate its programme and aim for victory at Le Mans with a year in advance.
While waiting for the new 650 «spider» according to the plans of Bernard Boyer and the manufacture of Roland Roy, taking more into account the stability factor than on the 630, it is decided to adapt the 630 to the regulation of 1969: it will be the 630-650. Two cars will be entered in this form at Le Mans in 1969, numbers 34 and 35, although designated on their sides as MS 650.
The 34 is built on the basis of the n° 24 of 1968, its rollcage not being compliant, a DIY is essential. A second tube is fixed over the hoop with an upper weld point, the base being embedded in polyester.
