R5 Alpine Gr2 appears for the first time to the Paris Autoshow in 1976. It is the sports version of Renault 5, born in 1972. Fitted with the engine Cléon-Fonte of 1397cm3, the breech comes from R8 Gordini. Moreover in the United Kingdom, Alpine Renault 5 is called Renault 5 Gordini.


In the rally of Monte Carlo of 1978 Renault entered 2 factory cars under Calberson livery. 


Car number 19 is driven by the teammates Ragnotti - Andrié and ends 2nd, 2 minutes behind Porsche 911 n°3 of Jean-Pierre Nicolas and Vincent Lavergne.

The impact of scoring twice, second and third places, in Rallye Monte Carlo in 1978 in front of the most important manufacturers was unexpectable for the Renault 5 Alpine Gr2.


The Renault Company decides to ride the wave of this victory. From this rally version, was born in March, 1978, a special series “Renault 5 Monte Carlo”, produced in 2400 units, which looks like the Rally livery (only orange Calberson is replaced by Sunflower yellow), are sold out in a few weeks.
