For 20 years Porsche came to LeMans 24 Hours without winning the mystical race. In 1970, the German firm wanted to take no chances. Porsche got in touch with John Wyer, whose reputation was already well known in LeMans and both the long and short tail versions of the Porsche 917 were entered.
Porsche car number 3 with psychedelic livery is one of the two LH engaged. But it is Porsche LH number 25 that quickly leads the race. The rain comes to disturb the progress of the less comfortable LH on wet track. At the halfway race, the positions are already congealed with 917K #23 in head and Porsche #3 of Gérard Larrousse who as the previous year has to content himself with the second place.
